Edge Mask tutorial problems

I have copied this remark from the actual tutorial. I thought that I should post it here as well.

When I tried to follow the Edge Mask tutorial I encountered the following problems.

First in constructing the Edge Mask I had to reduce the number of pixels selected from 15 to 5 to achieve anything like the results shown on the video. This may be due to a difference in resolution in the downloaded image.

Second when I tried to apply the Fade Unsharp Mask command the four choices at the bottom of the menu, including Luminosity, were grayed out, i.e. unavailable. Most of the other choices were active so I didn't accidentally disable the command by performing another action in between.

Other than that everything went as specified. If you could reply to this and let me know what the possible problem is with the Fade Unsharp Mask command I would be grateful. It could simply be Wilson's Law in operation ("If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong, but only for Wilson").

I'm using CS4 on an XP PC.

Edge Mask

Thanks chawil, I've posted a reply on the vido page itself, you can view it here

The solution at last!

When I Ctrl-clicked the Edge Mask layer in the Channels pallette to load the layer as a selection I didn't notice that it had made that layer active; i.e. rather than applying the Unsharp Mask to the RGB composite, I was applying it to the Edge Mask! That's why the options were inactive. I solved the problem by using the Select/Load Selection menu option rather than Ctrl-clicking and everything worked fine. I suppose I could Ctrl-click and then reselect the composite layer but it seemed more straight forward to use the menu.

This may be because I'm using CS4. There are so many differences to previous versions and not all of them for the better.

I've been right through the tutorial now about three or four times. If you know anyone who needs an edge mask making let me know!

Thanks again.
