Adjustment Layers permit you to make non-destructive colour adjustments, but what if you want to isolate those adjustments to a particular area of the image, maybe a friends hair, your pet's collar, the sky, the ground - or some raspberry jelly? Well then you have masks, a relatively easy but hugely powerful method of applying your adjustments where you want them. In this video I'll show you how they work, and we'll set about isolating the aforementioned jelly!

Red hue around blue berries
Currently, there looks like there is a red hue hanging around the blue berries. Is that red hue supposed to be there? In fact, I think the red hue is showing up in the entire white upper section. Shouldn't it be a blue hue? If not, how and when are you going to change the red hue around the blue berries to a blue hue? Will the hue be resolved in your next video on Basic Adjustment Layers?
Thanks, JAW

Red to Blue
Hi JAW,
In the third video we look at selections and tighter masking control using adjustment layers.
If you still have redness around the edge of the berries you can try amending the active colour range by adjusting the sliders at the bottom of the dialogue box. They afford tighter control over what is included and excluded from the adjustment. Unfortunately I don't go into them with any detail as I wanted to keep things focused on adjustment layers in general rather than the hue/saturation adjustment layer specifically.
The thing with this particular adjustment is that when we rotate the colours around the hue wheel (something we're doing when we make adjustments in hue/saturation) we end up affecting everything in the image, unless it's been masked out. I just had a play with the image myself and most of the red/pink remaining on the edges of the berries is just artifacting from the pinkish colour of the Angel Delight. I notice some of it is there even before I make an adjustment.
Let me know what you think?
Matt
